What is buffering?

The term “buffering” is avoiding or distracting emotions and using something outside of yourself to make you feel better in the moment. 

We all have used some form of a coping mechanism at some point in our lives, when you're feeling uncomfortable and you end up resorting to an outside pleasure to make you feel better. However, these actions can end up having long term consequences.
